Core safety assessment
For roles where the site does not ask for a full safety-critical medical.

Where a medical fits with your duties
The duty
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to assess risk and make sure people are fit for the work they do.
The evidence
A safety-critical medical gives you documented evidence that this has been considered for the role. Each medical is built to the standard your role or site works to.
Confined space
The 1997 Regulations' Approved Code of Practice says medical fitness may need considering.
Safety-critical medical questions
A fitness-for-work assessment for roles where a lapse in health could put the worker or others at serious risk – construction and plant work, working at height, confined space and lone working.
There's no single medical set out in law for forklift or plant operators, but many employers and sites – and plant schemes such as CPCS and NPORS – expect operators to be medically fit. Our forklift medical (£80) is for counterbalance, reach and other lift truck operators and has its own page on this site; digger, crane and other plant operators take the safety-critical medical.
No. The minibus driver medical is a fitness assessment led by an occupational health advisor, for drivers who already hold the licence, and it has its own page on this site. A DVLA D4 medical is completed by a doctor on the D4 form to Group 2 standards, to gain or renew a D1 (minibus) or PCV licence. You can book a D4 online on our HGV, LGV and PCV page.
The Approved Code of Practice to the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 says medical fitness may need to be considered – claustrophobia, breathing difficulties, or fitness to wear breathing apparatus. Our confined space medical covers these, supporting your risk assessment rather than replacing it.

There's no period fixed in law – how often the medical is repeated is for the employer or site to decide, based on their risk assessment and the demands of the role. We advise to the standard you work to and note any review date on the certificate.
Either. If you are paying yourself, book online and pay by card. If your employer is arranging medicals for a team, they send an enquiry, we set the day up at our clinic or on site, and we invoice them.
Please bring photo ID, your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, and a list of any medication you take. Your fitness-for-work certificate is issued within 24 hours of clinical review.
